It’s for cars without the keyless entry option. The slot takes a smart key which has to be docked in the starter control unit before the engine will start. There’s a slot for the XF key in the lower right side of the dasboard. When you put your key in there is clicks into place. You need to push the key to release it.

What to do if your smart key is not working?
It doesn’t always de-program with a battery change. But if it does, the technique of putting the fob in the car, hitting start twice, then locking/unlocking the driver door with the key, and finally hitting start again worked great for me. Super easy. I was amazed.
