What does rough idle mean on a jeep?
While the Jeep was stopped and idling, for example at the stoplight, we both noticed the engine idling rough, like it wanted to stall out, with the RPM fluctuating between 400-500 RPM (it did dip to as low as 350 on a couple of occassions). No trouble codes were displayed, however.

Can a bad spark plug cause a rough idle?
I find both hard to believe since the spark plugs are brand new (OEM-spec Champion Platinum plugs) which I’ve always used and I can’t see the ignition coil (s) going bad suddenly. He also mentioned that bad O2 sensors can cause a rough idle, but he said bad O2 sensors would not cause the engine to idle as roughly as it did.
Why is the alternator on my Jeep not charging?
Looks like the field coil of the alternator isn’t getting power. There are 3 wires attached to the alternator. One is a big fat wire that goes to the battery, this is the alternator output. The other two wires feed power to the field coil.
Is the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 6 cyl fixed?
Although I’m withholding final judgement–the beast is fixed! Anyone who knows me knows I’ve had problems with my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 6-cyl for what seems like ages. It’s been having issues (well, one issue in particular) since at least fall of last year.
What did I need to Fix my Jeep?
Eventually I replaced pretty much the entire ignition system–ignition coil, wires, spark plugs, distributor cap & rotor, and the cam shaft sensor. The spark plugs were worn, and the coil was cracked so it was good to get new parts in there. I changed my fuel filter and oil filter.
Where are the fuses on a jeep alternator?
If you don’t see voltage on the field coil terminals, you might have a blown fuse. The field coil is powered by a box called Powertrain Control Module, and there are 3 fuses that might be of interest, numbered 6, 19, and 26 according to the schematic (see below).
