What was the problem with the VW afterrmarket radio?
The problem is, VW brought the “K-Line”, the wire on which all of the control modules in the car communicate with the scan-tool to a pin in the connector on which older radios used to put +12 back into the harness. (We’re not sure whether this was for antenna power or as an amplifier turn-on or what).
What causes a Volkswagen Passat to fail to start?
This Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI engine ECU is a very common failure that will cause the engine to cut out whilst driving or fail to start completely. The fault may sometimes occur intermittently and allow the engine to restart for a short period however, ECU failure will normally cause complete none starting of the engine.
How is the ECU on a Volkswagen Passat tested?
Each Volkswagen Passat engine ECU is fully tested on our HIL rigs under real-world both before and after the rebuild. During the rebuild we only use higher rated than standard components to ensure that, once rebuilt, this engine ECU will outlast the vehicle it is fitted back onto.
When did VW start using diagnostics capable radios?
Somewhere between 1997 and 1998, VW and Audi started using diagnostics-capable radios in most of their models. That means the dealer’s scan tools (and our own VCDS system) can talk to the radio. Why?
What’s the start baud on a 1997 VW Passat?
If you have a 1997 B5 Passat (non-US models only), use 0.70e on the Central Convenience system. 1998 and newer Passats do not have this problem. Works fine with the HEX Interfaces. If you’re using a “dumb” interface, you must set the Start Baud on the Options Screen to 4800 to get these to work.
Why is the OBD2 port on my car not communicating?
Went and got my Blue Scanner (I have previously used it on this vehicle and it worked great) and plugged it into the port but it would not communicate. Tried my scanner in a few other vehicles and it communicates with them, so the issue is not the scanner.

What they often do is install better after-market radios. And they most often do this by using an aftermarket adapter-harness which plugs right into the car’s harness, so they don’t have to cut up the car’s harness.
How does an aftermarket radio work on a VCD?
Trouble is, some of the aftermarket harnesses faithfully reproduces the older, non-diagnostics radios with a loop of wire between +12 and the pin where the K-line is on newer models. So you install your fancy new radio with one of these and everything works fine until.. somebody plugs in a scan tool.
Why does my aftermarket radio not work in my car?
If you plug them into a car with the K-line shorted to +12, they simply won’t work in that car, but it won’t hurt them either. Some dealers will refuse to scan any car that has an aftermarket radio. Since most dealers have “killed” a few of their very expensive scan-tools, I can sort of understand why.
Is there a problem with the afterrmarket radio?
You can test for this problem yourself without removing the radio. First, if your car is a 1996 or earlier model, don’t bother — the K-Line doesn’t go to the radio harness and there is no possibility that that the car has this problem. If you have a Vag-Saver : Simply turn the ignition ON and plug in the Vag-Saver.
