What kind of transmission does a Mazda CX 9 have?
273-horsepower 3.7L V6 6-speed shiftable automatic AWD Drive shaft for all wheel drive to the rear wheels. Seal at the trans case started leaking.. Nothing major and was still under warranty Transfer case failed. Replaced under warranty and Mazda added 2 yrs to powertrain warranty to cover this part.
Why does my Mazda CX-9 shift to lower gear?
There must be some logic in the transmission control that wil shift to a lower gear if it determines you are coasting and apply the brakes to slow. This is a guess on my part other than noticing the shiftng of the transmission. The transmission control has likely changes from 2009 to 2012. 2009….

PipebOZ…I have a 2009 CX-9 AWB, the problem is the torque converter…the torque converter cannot be replaced…the whole transmission would need to be replaced or rebuilt. Is there an extended warranty on a Mazda CX9?
Good to know, thanks. Update: Mazda USA towed us and our CX9 arpund 300 miles to a dealership near our house, they took care of the bill, then the dealership ended up replacing the PTU and whole transmission, no questions asked, all covered under the extended warranty.

Are there any problems with the Mazda CX9 transfer case?
Known issue of transfer case mechanical failure in all cx-9 models from 2007-2015. Transfer case is too close to exhaust causing the oil to dry up. Transfer case explodes causing the vehicle to lock up while driving. Known issue that has cause many accidents.
