What is the difference between D and D3 on a Honda Accord?
D is your typical normal gear selection for normal driving. In D, the transmission will use ALL the 5 forward gears it has depending mainly on it’s current load (stress) condition. D3 exists in case you need to cut your momentum a bit when you’re going down a hill for example.
What’s D3 and D4?
Each of these gear selections is a type of limiter. If you go to D4 the car will only shift into the first four gears, 1–4. It will not shift into 5th or higher. D3 will keep the car in gears 1–3 and D2 will keep the car in gears 1–2.

What’s the problem with Honda Accord D4 light?
The problem: The D4 light comes on (sometimes intermittently) and the car gets stuck in a higher gear than 1st. That is, it doesn’t shift through the gears, but remains in what seems to be 3rd. Manually putting the transmission into 1st works though.
