What is the difference between D and D3 on a Honda Accord?

D is your typical normal gear selection for normal driving. In D, the transmission will use ALL the 5 forward gears it has depending mainly on it’s current load (stress) condition. D3 exists in case you need to cut your momentum a bit when you’re going down a hill for example.

The problem: The D4 light comes on (sometimes intermittently) and the car gets stuck in a higher gear than 1st. That is, it doesn’t shift through the gears, but remains in what seems to be 3rd. Manually putting the transmission into 1st works though.
