What is an AR book?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a popular reading program used in schools. AR helps teachers track students’ independent practice and progress with reading. It’s not specifically designed for kids who learn and think differently. But teachers can use it to help guide struggling readers to books they can read successfully.
Who created AR reading?

In the mid-1980s, educator Judi Paul created a program to help motivate her four children to read over the summer months. Word of her program’s success soon spread—and Accelerated Reader was born.

What makes a book an AR book?
The ATOS formula used in Accelerated Reader analyses the full text of a book, not merely short passages. The book level is determined by the characteristics that most heavily influence readability: average sentence length, average word length and word difficulty level.
Is Accelerated Reader research based?
Accelerated Reader’s statement is “Accelerated Reader is a research-based reading practice program that equips teachers with unparalleled insight into independent reading practice, person- alized goal-setting tools, activities that span a variety of skills and text types and a worldwide community of support.” (p. 41).
Why is Accelerated Reader bad?
Many students experience anxiety during quizzes and tests. Essentially, people who think Accelerated Reader is “bad” believe it takes the fun out of reading, and it causes students to view reading as something that is required for a grade – therefore, causing students to dislike reading.
What is ATOS book level?
ATOS is a measure of readability—in other words, a readability formula designed to guide students to appropriate-level books. A book with an ATOS of 6.0 would be understandable to individuals with reading comprehension skills of a typical student entering grade 6.
Can you ar test at home?
Due to the coronavirus and students working from home, we are providing students with access to the Accelerated Reading program outside of school. This will enable students to read books and take quizzes from the comfort of home.
