What is a R39 bulb?
Replacement Bulbs for Lava Lamps. R39 Watt Reflector type bulbs. Specially designed to reflect and direct the light into the base of lava lamps in order to create enough heat to start the lava motion.
Can I use a 25W bulb in a 20W?
25W in a 20W socket is 25% oversized. so just as bad. There’s a good chance that something will break, and it might be the transformer in the base of that lamp, that part is most unlikely to have 25% excess capacity. It may void your insurance cover.
Can you use any bulb in a lava lamp?

Can I use an oven bulb in a lava lamp?
My partner (an electrician) suggested we try an oven lamp, at 25W (SES or E14) because they can withstand the heat. Problem is they are not amazing quality lava lamps (cheap imports), but they have nice colour, just not good flow with these bulbs.

Why does my lava lamp bulb keep blowing?
A loose connection in the lamp holder can also cause bulbs to blow. The same can happen if the spring loaded connection in the bulb holder is slightly loose. This will cause electricity to arc across the contact, cause too much heat and blow the bulb.
