What is a pressure cooling system?
Atmospheric Pressure and Boiling The pressure of gas above a liquid affects the boiling point. In an open system this is called atmospheric pressure. If the pressure is reduced, the liquid requires less energy to change to a gaseous phase, and boiling occurs at a lower temperature.
How does pressure build up in the cooling system?
When the cooling system’s pressure exceeds the safety limit, the cap’s safety valve opens to discharge the extra coolant. Vehicles these days have a recovery tank to store that discharged coolant. How Does The Pressure Buildup Happen? So, what causes pressure build up in cooling system? How does this work?
Is there any pressure in the coolant reservoir?
IIRC it always did have a little pressure. When I had a head gasket leak it would pressurize the coolant reservoir till the overflow leaked when running . Especially at idle ! IMO, there probably should be some residual pressure in the cooling system if its in good working order.
What should the pressure be on a car cooling system?
If you cannot get the system to hold pressure chances are coolant is pouring out of a leak somewhere or the pressure tester is not attached properly, recheck the tester connection. Avoid pressure above 18 pounds so you do not damage the cooling system by causing a rupture.
How does a radiator or cooling system pressure test work?
A radiator or cooling system pressure test is useful when finding a radiator leak or a blown head gasket. This tool attaches to the top or the radiator or coolant reservoir and enables air pressure to be pumped into the system including the engine block, cylinder heads, coolant hoses, heater core and radiator.

IMO, there probably should be some residual pressure in the cooling system if its in good working order. But, since its an 01, you might want to have the resivior cap pressure-checked. They do fail with time.
