What is a brake torque?
Brake torque is essentially the power of the braking system. The brake caliper acts on the disc at a certain distance from the hub center, known as the effective radius. The force exerted by the caliper, multiplied by the effective radius of the system equals the brake torque.
Do you need a torque wrench to replace rotors?
You absolutely do need a torque wrench. If the lug nuts aren’t tightened to the proper torque, it’s a near certainty to warp brake rotors. Drums are made so thin these days that they can easily be warped too. You can do the job without one, but chances are extremely high you’ll be doing it again.
What should the torque be on wheel bearings?
A typical final torque of 20-30 in.-lbs will leave zero end play and a slight amount of preload on the wheel bearing assembly. Whether you’re installing a ball, roller or sealed bearing assembly, using correct procedures and tools will ensure a comeback-free wheel bearing installation.

Tapered roller bearings on the front of RWD vehicles are never preloaded. They’re snugged up with no more than 15 to 20 ft.-lbs. of torque while rotating the wheel to make sure the bearings are seated. Then the adjustment nut is loosened 1/6 to 1/4 a turn and locked in place with a new cotter pin.

Note – There has been conflicting torque specs for the rear caliper bracket bolts. GMSI and Motor show 148ft lbs, while a Helms book shows 89ft/lbs.
