What happens when you turn the key on a Bendix starter?
When you turn the key to start with a bendix starter motor, the motor armature spins and the inertia of the bendix causes it to wind itself along its helix, engage with the flywheeel ring gear and then rotate the engine.
How does a Bendix Motor work on a car?
With a bendix motor, the repeated impacting into the ring gear at these areas knocks out the ring gear teeth to the point where the bendix can no longer engage and turn the engine. When you check the bendix, check the ring gear. The pre-engaged motor avoids all of this by engaging its pinion first.
Can a less than optimal battery charge prevent starter Bendix?
A less than optimal battery and a functioning solenoid you would at least get the bendix to actuate. The less than optimal battery, would not supply enough power to have the starter actually rotate the engine.
Do you know the signs of a failing starter motor?
Knowing the signs of a failing starter motor, can help you diagnose the problem. When Diagnosing starter motor problems, always start with the battery. So, for your starter motor to work properly, your car battery has to be in; excellent working condition and fully charged.
Why does my starter make a grinding noise?
Either the gear has stripped or has become, dislodged against the flywheel. A worn starter drive gear not making proper contact with the flywheel, could make this noise. This is similar to the one that is heard if you start your engine and then, accidentally restart it. However, grinding may also happen, inside the starting motor.
What should I do if my starter is not working?
The starter pinion gear engages this wheel to make your car engine crank. Remove the starter motor and set your transmission gear to neutral. Rotate the crankshaft manually using a ratchet. There is a pulley at the front or bottom of your engine block. The pulley should move as you watch how the pion gears are reacting.

Why does my starter not fit with my engine block?
If you have a Chevy engine block, make sure your starter has the correct bolt pattern for your engine. Problem: Starter does not fit with my headers. Solution #1: For starters with “clockable” mounting blocks, you’ll need to experiment with the different mounting positions.
