Basically, the reason why your gears are grinding is because your pressure plate isn’t being pressed in all the way for whatever reason – similar to shifting without using the clutch. Doing this adjustment allows you to fully compress your pressure plate and allow you to shift normally.

Recall for popping out of third but mine was not doing that. 3rd gear was popping out and grinding when shifting. This is a common issue that affected 8th gen manual civics. A TSB was issued but only covered a narrow production range. My car was technically out of the range but affected by the problem.

There were no loud noises, no service warnings or lights. Car has about 75,000 miles and the transmission was last serviced in 2018 at 60,000 miles. The car has routine maintenance records. The recall (NHTSA 15v574000) was performed in 2016 which was a software update due to a mechanical transmission problem.
