Why does my Honda Civic make a noise when moving off first gear?

It sounds like a dry/worn throw out bearing, however, the symptoms suggest something else – the noise only occurs when the clutch is being slipped. Holding down the clutch pedal produces no sound. I understand this is a commonly reported “feature”.
