Clogged or Dirty Air Filters Dirty air filters are one of the most common reasons lawn mowers sputter. Dirt can be present in the apertures that lead from the carburetor and the fuel filter and interrupt the flow of fuel supply to the combustion chamber.
How do you adjust the governor on a Honda engine?
To adjust the governor, you would loosen the screw on the bottom of the governor arm and push the governor arm so the throttle is wide open. Then you would turn the bottom “clip” (which is connected to the governor shaft) counter clockwise. This will set the governor shaft on top of the governor spool.
Why does my Honda lawn mower rev up and down?
A lawnmower that hunts and surges may be experiencing something as simple as an airflow issue. If the air that the engine requires to run is blocked, especially sporadically, it can cause the engine to slow down. When the blockage moves or clears, the engine may suddenly rev up in response.
Why does Honda gcv160 engine only run wide open?
The throttle butterfly in the carb is just a crack more then at idle. When a load is applied the governor sense’s the rpm drop and allows the throttle to open further to compensate for load. Full power output is achieved under heavy load that allows the governor to open the throttle to full open but due to te load still remains near 3200 rpm.
Why is my Honda GCV 160 surging under load?
It sounds like the problem I had, My engine has auto throttle and surged without load, less so when under load. You could see the governor going back and forth as the surging occurred, with a period I would guess at 3 seconds or so. I discovered oily gas in the carb bowl, due to overfilling of the oil sump.

The engine serial # is GJAE1576258. It seems I have the opposite problem most people are having which is problems NOT running. Mine fires up on the first pull and it revs very high (sounds like it’s about to explode).
Do you have a dirty / fouled jet in your GCV 160?
Looks like governor rod is hooked up correctly. Do I have a dirty/fouled jet, or is it something else? PS last year same engine wouldnt run without the choke and I took it to small engine guy who simply replaced the carb- I thought that was pretty crude but they are $35 from Sears.
