Should you weld your diff?
Welding the differential will put a large amount of stress on these components and the last thing you want is your left axle crumbling to bits mid corner. Get under there, make sure everything’s secure and in good condition. For god sake, weld the differential properly or get someone who knows what they’re doing.
Can you drift without a welded diff?
Member. In answer to your title, no you don’t need a welder to drift, standard LSD is fine but as has been said; try one out for a bit and see how you get on with it.
How do you tell if you have a welded diff?
Quicker than taking the back plate off would be to just drive round a corner (easiest to tell on full lock at very low speed) and depress the clutch. If its welded it’ll still lock so the clunking/skipping will still be there. If its not welded, be it mechanical/viscous/whatever, it’ll not skip with the clutch down.
How long will a welded diff last?
Playworker’s was badly welded and lasted about 6 months before breaking IIRC. We just welded it back up and it’s been fine since. Mine was welded properly and has lasted about 18 months so far. We welded a diff for someone on Driftworks and that will never break, it’s got so much weld in it it’s untrue.
Will a welded diff pass MOT?
Welded diffs are perfectly legal, I had an MOT Tester look into it. Upto you if you inform insurance, you should do so. Welded diffs give more grip, this is fact. Many vehicles sold today have locked diffs as standard, this acts the same as a welded diff.
Can you drift on an open diff?
Drifting with an open differential is extremely dangerous. Attempting to drift with one will lead to one of three outcomes: One tire breaks traction, both tires break traction, or one tire breaks loose, and the second loses grip after.
Is it possible to drift open diff?
Can you Unweld a welded diff?
Can you unweld a diff? Simply – no. Once you’ve welded your diff, it’s a done deal, and if you regret your choice further down the line, your best options will be to swap or replace it.
Is a welded diff illegal Australia?
Not only is it illegal, it is also outright dangerous. In the wet, you WILL see your arse spin around and around in front of your front end. It will be an absolute pig to corner in. Cheers and good luck to you if you do it.
Will an open diff spin both tires?
It is theoretically possible to have both tires spinning with an open diff, although practically impossible to achieve. And it is not an increase of torque that will do it. For this to happen, both tires must unhook at exactly the same time (can’t put enough emphasis on exactly).
