How does a long style clutch disc work?

When the clutch pedal is released, the disc closes on the clutch disc, clamping it between the pressure plate and the flywheel. Long style is more often seen in strictly drag racing applications. The Long style uses three narrow fingers that couple the release bearing to a group of nine springs around the pressure plate.

Can a flywheel be replaced on a VW?

If you never want to deal with rattling DMF again you could replace it with a regular solid flywheel from a VW Corrado G60 4 cylinder. This is a common modification and they have good aftermarket support.
