How often does the exhaust backfire on deceleration?
The backfire is 2 consistent pops, one right after the other. I’m going to drive the car today and watch the AFR reading to determine whether it is going lean or rich when the exhaust pops. My question is, when you lift off the throttle does the Atomic cut off fuel?
Why does the backfire go out the window?
In either case, it would provide less fuel, causing a leaner condition, so if it’s helping, the lean backfire thing goes out the window. The reason it’s helping is that it’s providing less fuel for your exhaust leak to light off.
When does a carburetor backfire what does it mean?
Don’t be mistaken… After-burn is similar to back-fire, which is the burning of fuel in the intake port of the carburetor. Both conditions occur when a very lean air/fuel mixture burns so slowly in the combustion chamber that it is still burning when the exhaust and/or intake valves open.
Why is my GL1000 not running so well?
GL1000s will run poorly when valve lash is not set exactly to spec. Fortunately, valve lash stays “in spec” for a long time once properly set. Note: Valve timing on a GL1000 is critical. Verify that your cambelts are installed correctly.
What causes a dead cylinder on a GL1000?
“Dead” cylinder is usually an ignition problem. It can be a carb problem…especially if it is rpm-specific. Faulty stator, rectifier or voltage regulator. GL1000s require full function of the charging system for the ignition to perform as designed.
What happens if the cam belts are off on a GL1000?
Verify that your cambelts are installed correctly. The “match marks” on the flywheel and the cam pulleys must align perfectly. The GL1000 is an interference design engine. If your belts are off by 1 tooth, your engine will run like crap. If your belts are off by 2 or more teeth, serious engine damage will occur immediately.
What do you need to know about the GL1000 ignition?
This includes coils, plug wires, plug caps, spark plugs, ballast resistor, breaker points, condenser, ignition advance mechanism, ignition switch, kill switch, main fuse, battery, and all associated wiring harness components. Ignition performance and timing is critical on GL1000s! Ignition problems often mimic carb problems to an untrained ear.
What causes a motorcycle engine to backfire on decel?
Another cause of after-fire is the engine going lean on decel; the Suzuki carbureted bikes have special valves to enrich the mixture on high vacuum to help with this. If your system is set slightly lean (most newer bikes are), this may just be the way it is.
Why does my car backfire when I let off the throttle?
When I let off the throttle and the engine is slowing the car down (4 speed manual), I’m getting an exhaust backfire. It’s much more intense when coming off of hard acceleration. Now, I understand this can be either a lean or rich condition at throttle lift where un-burned fuel collects and ignites in the exhaust system.

Why does the exhaust backfire when the throttle closes?
If this is correct, then due to the vacuum increase when the throttle closes, a lower PV% would allow that vacuum to add more fuel than a higher %. Considering that the backfire went away immediately after adjusting the PV% down, I have to conclude that the above explanation I was given is correct.

Why does my car backfire when I decelerate?
The heat from the pipes then ignites the vapor and boom, backfire. Not uncommon, should happen when decelerating in gear, the explosions aren’t as violent, and don’t get as much gas burned, so left-overs happen.
What to do if your Harley backfiring on deceleration?
Don’t “change the plugs” like some people suggest, it’s a waste of time and money. Messing with the ignition timing really won’t help either, because it is still a lean fuel/air mix on deceleration that is the cause.
