What is the difference between Cat C15 and C16?
The C16 started as the 3404E 15.8L, the block,head,injectors are the same as the C15. The bore and stroke are different as well as ECM thats all. When the twin turbo came out they only wanted to make one engine so they took the crank out of the C16 and that made the engine a 15.2L with a higher compression of 18:1.
Is the 3406E a good engine?
In terms of failure, the 3406E is actually pretty good, especially compared to some other Caterpillar engines. However, like all engines, they still had their issues. This was fixed when the engine upgraded to the C15, and seals replaced gaskets, along with a new block design.

How much power does a C-15 cat engine have?
No disrespect but chances are this guy does not own an Acert! They are made to be lugged, all the way down to 1100 rpm. It’s not the same as an “E” or the first C15’s (6nz) there is absolutely no power above 1500 and running one there will do nothing but burn fuel.
