How does AIS SART work?
An AIS SART does not use RADAR technology, instead it transmits AIS messages containing accurate GPS position information. These messages can be received by any vessel with AIS and can generate an alarm linked to the exact location of the SART. AIS and RADAR SARTs are considered equivalent by maritime authorities.
How is SART activated?
The radar-SART may be triggered by any X-band radar within a range of approximately 8 nautical miles (15 kilometers). Each radar pulse received causes the SART to transmit a response which is swept repetitively across the complete radar frequency band.
How may SARTs are activated when there is an emergency on board?
A SART has a receiver that detects the signals from X-band radars (9.2 – 9.5 GHz). If the SART detects a signal it immediately transmits twelve pulses on the same frequency. If the rescue vessel is very close, the SART will be activated permanently by the side lobes of the radar antenna.
