Well enough was enough. I removed the old pump which also includes the tank fuel gage gizmo. Threw the pump away and secured a steel rod with cable ties to hold the pipe on the bottom of the pump. Inserted the pump-free sender unit.

What to do when your fuel pump is not working?

I attach the separate ten foot section of fuel line to the pump’s outflow barb with a hose clamp and stick the other end of that hose into my truck’s fuel filler port.
