On the ML there are actually two seperate latches,the first is the one controlled by the cable located in the passenger compartment that gives you the initial “pop” of the hood,the second is the one controlled by the handle located beneath the star in the grille.
How big is the hole in the hood latch?
If you have physically checked to make sure the ball on the inside latch is missing and it’s not missing, then you will have to drill a hole on the hood latch through the grill. I’m guessing it’s about a 5/16″ bit or so…slightly off center to the right.

How can I get my Mercedes Benz hood to release?
The second method to get the hood to release is to access the hood latch release from underneath. This is more tricky and a bit more difficult. Before you do that use a flashlight to check if the hood cable is in the right slot. Very often the cable falls off the slot and no longer can release the hood.
