How do you install a distributor on an oil pump?
To engage the oil pump drive, put very light pressure on the top of the distributor housing and rotate the engine clockwise until the distributor drops into place on the manifold. Once the distributor drops in, install the distributor hold-down clamp and tighten it slightly. (Image/Jeff Smith)
When to remove distributor clamp from oil pump?
Remove the Distributor clamp and then the distributor. NOTING the direction the rotor turns and the position the rotor is in when it has been lifted out about 1-2″ so it is no longer meshing with the camshaft. THAT is where you want the rotor to point when you first attempt to reinstall the Distributor.
Can a high volume oil pump cause distributor gear wear?
Davis agreed, “Excessive distributor-gear wear can be a problem with Ford engines. Most of the time, the problem again results from the use of a high-volume oil pump. High-volume oil pumps put a lot of stress on the distributor and cam gears. A high-volume oil pump is not necessary on a street-driven engine that turns no more than 7,000 rpm.”
When to align oil pump rod and distributor?
THAT is where you want the rotor to point when you first attempt to reinstall the Distributor. The oil pump rod will align up as it was before and the rotor will fall in place as it was before pointing to the spot it was before. Rather than a screwdriver…

Why does my oil pump distributor sit up?
Wouldn’t be the oil pump but could be an incorrect intermediate shaft. If you have a big block shaft in a small block it will cause the distributor to sit up even when fully seated in the notch on the shaft.
