The procedure to read it is in the manual – you have to press the start button without putting your foot on the clutch and keep it pressed until all the dash warning lights come on, then the option becomes ungreyed (basically the same as turning the key to igniton position II on a normal car).

Click to expand… the sensors in the sump are very reliable,there is however a short dipstick fitted to most 5 cyl diesel engines the exception however is the new d4 4 cl engine which only has a electronic check.
Why do I need to underfill my Volvo V40?
You should underfill when changing oil to allow for DPF regen fuel getting into the sump. Check you have the correct spec oil as the wrong oil just might trigger an oil change message. You can drain a bit of the oil if you have a carter pump. There is a tube connected to your oil pan which you can use.
Where is the dipstick in the engine bay?
The oil level option in the computer is greyed out. When I select it nothing happens. As its greyed out I assume that my car does not have the in car level gauge option fitted but for the life of me I can’t find a dipstick in the engine bay. Any suggestions? I’m sorry if this is a stupid question.
