How big are the bolts on a torque converter?
The transmission to engine bolts need to be at least about 50 ft/lbs as these are the same size as the head bolts, but a slghtly lower grade bolt. (head bolts are 70-80 ft/lbs) Id think the converter nuts could go to about 45 ft/lbs, being a 3/8″ NF thread. The stock converter to flex-plate bolts are 5/16 NF and the spec is 25 foot pounds.
Where are the mounting pads on a torque converter?
Verify that the flexplate bolts do not interfere with the torque converter. Verify that the torque converter mounting pads sit flush against the flexplate.
How to check a torque converter for reliability?
Verify that the torque converter pilot diameter matches the crankshaft pilot diameter. Verify that the torque converter bolt pattern matches the flexplate bolt pattern. Verify that the flexplate bolts do not interfere with the torque converter. Verify that the torque converter mounting pads sit flush against the flexplate.
Can a torque converter be attached to a flexplate?
NOTICE: Torque converters that feature threaded mounting bosses instead of bolt holes MUSThave the correct length bolts installed when attaching the torque converter to the flexplate. Installation of bolts that are too long will result in damage and may puncture the front cover of the torque converter.

What kind of torque converter do I need for Vortec engine?
Torque the transmission to engine mounting bolts to 40 ft/lb. On Vortec engines with a cast aluminum oil pan, torque the lower transmission mounting bolts (threading into the oil pan) to 33 ft/lb. Apply LocTite 242 or 262 to the threads of the torque converter bolts, and torque the TC bolts to 45 ft/lb.
