Do you think about power steering all the time?

Power steering is one of those things you don’t think about until it’s gone. And owners of Ford cars with electronic power assisted steering (EPAS) are thinking about it all the damn time, if you catch my drift. Hydraulic systems have a multi-decade track record of successful steering with relatively easy maintenance.

Are there any problems with the steering system?

There have been problems with the system in other cars as well. Toyota, BMW and Lexus, among others have all had some problems ranging from bad steering motors to control modules. This is actually a common thing to happen as a new technology enters the market and gets real life testing from the consumer.

Is it possible to lose power steering in a Ford?

It’s just going to take a lot more effort. One major concern about Ford’s EPAS is that sometimes when it goes out, it does so without any warning. No dash lights, no chimes, just a sudden loss of steering assist. Driving a car without power steering is totally possible, I’m sure your grandfather would tell you he did it for years.

Why does electric power assisted steering not work?

This is not convenient for hydraulics as the hydraulic fluid being pumped through the system will have a set viscosity (how easily a fluid flows) therefore some alternate form of restriction has to be used.

Why does my power steering keep going bad?

The power steering system can encounter an issue due to regular, ongoing wear and tear, age of parts, or an auto accident. It’s important to keep your eyes out for any of the warning signs of premature wear of the power steering system so that you can address the issue before it worsens.

How does power steering work in a car?

It connects the steering wheel and column to what is called the intermediate steering shaft. This shaft is driven by the electric steering motor, then sends steering assist to the rack and pinion. This is all controlled by a module or computer. Here is a pic of a typical steering motor… GM Electric power steering problems.

Can a power steering pump not be replaced?

When the pump begins not working properly, it can cause the system to “ dry out ,” causing parts to wear quickly and the power steering to fail. Eventually the pump will need to be replaced, so it’s important to follow your maintenance schedule. Hydraulic power steering fluid is essential to the function of the overall system.
