Do you need to replace timing belt in Lexus?
During it's recent oil change/checkup, the mechanic recommended that I replace the timing belt, even though it doesn't show sign of breaking '…because Lexus recommends repl… I have a 1999 Lexus with 120,000 miles on it.

Once you align the crank timing pulley to 6 O’clock then now you are ready to adjust the cam pulley to the proper position.

If your water pump is driven by the timing belt you should also change it while the timing belt is being changed, because if it goes out before the next timing belt change interval you’ll be paying double.

What happens if you break the belt on a Lexus?
The Lexus mechanic couldn’t (or perhaps would ‘t) give a straight answer to this question. He only eluded to the fact that if the belt was to break the piston “may” come into contact with the valves and the engine would be toast. I have done the obligatory web searching and have found that everyone under the sun has a different answer for this.
