Do you need a timing mark for a balancer?

Do you need a timing mark for a balancer?

If you use a bolt on timing mark, be sure and get one that matches whatever engine you have. You also want to match the diameter of the balancer too. A: Timing marks have changed during time.

Why do I need to change the distributor timing?

It’s important that the engine be idling at its warm-idle rpm. It’s likely that our static ignition timing at the crankshaft at idle may not be the desired 10 degrees BTDC. If it must be changed, merely loosen the hold-down nut and adjust the distributor until the initial timing on the crankshaft is at the desired timing figure.

How do you change ignition timing on a vacuum advance distributor?

Unplug the electrical connector and, if your model has it, the vacuum advance hose from the distributor. Plug the hose with a small screw and don’t remove the plug until you have adjusted ignition timing. Detach the distributor cap. On some models you can detach the cap without disconnecting the spark plug wires.

When to remove cap from Summit HEI distributor?

Once you feel compression building, look for the zero mark on the harmonic balancer to approach the timing tag. We prefer to set the initial timing for most engines at 10 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). With that set, remove the cap from the distributor. We’re using a Summit HEI distributor.

Why is my timing mark way off club?

Is the timing wrong, the tab installed on the engine in the wrong place, or just what the heck is going on. when I try to twist the distributor to get the mark closer to the timing tab, it will get about 1 inch away from the begining of the tab and the motor chokes down, wont run there.
