Do you have to lease a modem?
You need a modem for your internet to work. If you want Wi-Fi, you’ll need a router, too. Internet providers typically charge $10 to $15 a month to lease an all-in-one modem and router. But you can purchase your own modem and router, separately or in a combo unit, for less than the cost of renting.

Can I replace AT modem with my own?
AT requires you to use their gateway for their fiber service. You can disable the router portion (pass through mode) and connect a much better router to it. There is also a way to use your own modem but AT will still charge you the monthly fee regardless of what you do once you signup for the service.
