Many professionals and mechanics would recommend that both elements of the brake system be replaced at the same time, but occasionally the owner may be able to just replace the brake pads without the rotor if the rotor isn’t showing as much wear and tear.
What causes brake pads to wear more on one side than the other?
Uneven brake pad wear most commonly occurs as a result of caliper failure. This condition in turn causes the pads to put constant pressure against one of the brake rotors and cause that brake pad to wear significantly faster than the others.
Can you change one side of brake pads?
It is not recommended to get your brake pads changed on one side only. While it may be tempting since only one side has worn down, replacing brake pads on just one side will only cause further uneven wear and could be dangerous.
