Can you change timing chain on Mercedes C180 Kompressor?
Observe tightening torques. Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other sprockets. Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing chain removed. NOTE: Timing chain can be changed without dismantling engine. Using the tools listed above, the new chain can be linked to the old, passed round the sprockets and then joined.
Are there cam belts on a Mercedes Benz?
Hi Antonio, All Mercedes vehicles use timing chains, not cam belts – there are no service intervals on the chain. The vehicle servicing works on a flexible service system usually alternating between an A (smaller scope) to a B (larger scope) Service.
How often does the timing chain on a Kompressor break?
I have heard horror stories of the single timing chain (I believe this model has just one chain) stretching then breaking on this model sometimes, in the region of 70,000 – 120,000 miles, and causing damage to valves and engine that can cost £1,500 – £2,000 to sort, is this right? Is this rare?
What causes the timing chain to jump on a C180?
My problem was caused by the Crankshaft Sensor packing up, which in turn caused the Timing Chain to jump – causing a hell of a lot of damage, to valves, tappets, sprockets. Been told that Timing Chain jumping etc is a “known problem” on C180’s & when it happens it certainly happens, lap of the Gods what damage it might cause.

How does the timing chain tensioner work on a Mercedes?
Apparently the timing chain tensioner is hydraulically operated off engine oil pressure. In “the good old days” they used to fit a check valve in the oil feed to the tensioner so that it didn’t back off when the engine stopped. Some accountant type decided that was too expensive and it got deleted.
Are there any issues with Mercedes Benz W203 timing chain?
Though we have seen similar issues in it’s older version ‘M271.9 – Kompressor’ (Supercharged), in which camshaft adjuster teeth wear away and cause damage to the timing components. The earlier Kompressor variant of the M271 was also found in the earlier W203 bodied C180 and C200.
