You can, I would go buy a brand new 5 gallon bucket or at least a super clean one to drain it in. I plan on doing mine soon as well, but I think I’m just going to put new fluid in. My suggestion would be use a very clean or brand new catch can/bucket to put it in.
Can you put gasket sealer on a transmission pan?
Replace the filter, and you should not need any sealant on the gasket. One tip, do not over tighten the pan bolts, that will cause leaks. Use a big wide pan to catch the tranny fluid, it can get messy under there and plenty of old rags or paper towels.
