Can I put a plug on the end of Armoured cable?
Armoured cable can be connected to 3 pin plug of commando type but not to a 13A plug without some junction box. Most caravans will be supplied from a RCD with a 2.5 or 4 mm sq flexible cable laid across the grass.
Does SWA need RCD protection?
swa’s steel armour is NOT accepted as sufficient protection for the cable when buried. there is no requirement to afford rcd protection to cables buried outside. socket circuits that COULD be used outdoors MUST have RCD protection, when this is a domestic installation.
Do you have to earth both ends of SWA cable?
Yes, the armour should be earthed at least at the “supply” end. This ensures that anything that penetrates the cable (saw, drill, etc) will be earthed before the live cores are reached, and is therefore less likely to become energised.
Do you have to use SWA outside?
Voltage Rating: SWA cables are heavy, which makes them extremely difficult to bend; therefore they are most suited to underground cabling or fixed to outdoor walls using cable cleats.
Can you use Armoured cable as an extension lead?
We believe that using only the highest quality components creates leads which are not only safer, but will significantly out last any other extension lead, at a price which remains affordable. All extension leads are constructed to comply with BS7671.
Does a 63 amp socket need RCD protection?
Disconnection times are now clearly stated for circuits rated 63 Amps or less. Cables to supply temporary structures need to be protected at origin by an RCD rated 300mA or less, with time delay as BS EN 60947-2 or S Type.
Do all circuits need RCD protection 18th edition?
Requirements for RCD protection With the exception of FELV and RLV sockets, all AC sockets that are rated up to 32A will require RCD protection, as opposed to just 20A. This is a life-saving regulation designed to prevent any electrical shocks to the installer working with live AC socket outlets.
Can you use SWA as CPC?
Armouring: Steel Wire Armour (SWA) used for mechanical protection. That way the cable can withstand higher stresses, be buried directly and used in external or underground projects. The armouring is usually connected to earth and can be used as the CPC (as described above).
Does SWA Armour have to be earthed?
Regardless of whether the armouring of a steel wire armoured cable (swa) is employed as a protective conductor or not, it should always be effectively earthed to ensure the requirements of ADS are met.
