Why is my Jaguar XKR timing chain not working?
The new chain installed could be a faulty one causing this issue and thus, should be replaced. However, if the problem still persists, it could either point to a defective engine sensor or a failed throttle. Have the components properly checked to ensure which one is causing the fault. How to confirm if a timing chain on a Jaguar XKR quits working?
What are the common problems with the Jaguar XKR?
Common problems with XKR? I have just had the (apparently) common problem of water pouring into the passenger footwell after driving for a while with the A/C on. I found on the forum that it is a known issue with the drain pipe, which Jaguar have redesigned and sell for about £5, but fitting is a dash out job and they charge £370!
Why is my Jaguar XK8 making weird noises?
Timing chain tensioners can also be a problem on early engines as these can break up with disastrous results. Although modified metal tensioners, as fitted to the later 4.2-litre V8, can be retro-fitted to cure the problem, it’s still advisable to investigate any undue noises coming from the front of a Jaguar V8 engine.
How long does it take to service a Jaguar XKR?
Incidentally, Jaguar seem to have acknowledged the problem and issued a service bullitin limiting what the dealers can charge to about £370 inc VAT. Apparently it’s 2.80 hours officially, but I’d be amazed if they can get the dash and heater/aircon box out and in again in that time!

What happens if upper chain tensioner on Jaguar XK8 fails?
If the upper chain tensioners fail, the pistons can contact the valves and cause serious engine damage. The lower tensioners can also break, though their breakage does not damage the engine.
Are there any recalls on the Jaguar XK8?
For Jaguar XK8 engines produced from 1996 to 2000, the original all-plastic timing chain tensioners or guides were susceptible to stress fractures and could break apart. Symptoms of worn chain tensioners include a rattling noise on start up or unusually rough running – if experienced, the engine should be turned off immediately and not restarted.
What kind of engine does a Jaguar XK8 have?
Despite the Nikasil and timing chain tensioner problems putting a lot of buyers off older XK8s, the car’s 290bhp V8 engine has proved to be a solid and almost un-burstable unit if serviced correctly. The more powerful supercharged V8 fitted to the XKR coupé and convertible, launched in May 1998, is even more desirable.
