What makes a Jaguar XJ6 smell like gasoline?
The system consists of a fuel tank (2 on XJ6) with expansion space, solenoid operated purge control valve, vapor separator (s), pressure relief valve, restrictor, canister, and connecting lines and hoses. When the fuel tank vapor pressure exceeds a pre-set limit, the pressure relief valve opens and vapors flow into canister for storage.
What does purge hose do on Jaguar XJ6?
When the engine is warming up on XJ6 models, the purge hose is shut off by an energized solenoid valve. After engine coolant temperature exceeds 113 F (45 C), the valve opens since current no longer passes through a thermal switch (also part of air injection system on Federal models).
Why does my car smell like gasoline inside?
Actually, my girfriend was the first to notice the smell of gas fumes on my clothes before I knew anything about it. That has been since 2000; I bought the care in 1998 or 99. Sometimes the smell is stronger when I fill up. Other times, it is isn’t as strong. But it is there.
What is the pressure relief valve on a Jaguar XJ6?
The pressure relief valve also allows air to enter the tank when vacuum exceeds a pre-set limit. On the XJS HE models, the pressure relief valve is set to open at 2 psi. When the engine is warming up on XJ6 models, the purge hose is shut off by an energized solenoid valve.
What kind of engine does a Jaguar XJ have?
The Series I thru Series III XJ’s are what many consider to be the definitive modern Jaguar sedans. The engine most commonly found in these models was the 4.2L inline 6 cylinder engine derived from the classic Jaguar XK racing motor. Other engines which were offered included the 2.8L and 3.4L inline 6 and the glorious 5.3L V12.

What makes the engine smell worse after startup?
Here are the observations: Smell worsens after engine startup for first few miles, then tapers off. Disconnecting pressure valve from EGR side makes cabin smell even worse. Disconnecting pressure valve from tank side does not eliminate the smell. Leaving the filler caps unlatched is the ONLY thing that tends to kill the fumes.
Why is the trunk of my XJ6 locked?
Right now, the battery is dead in the car (the battery is in the trunk) and the trunk is locked. I can’t unlock the trunk with the key because manually turning the key for some reason will NOT unlock it (it turns in the hole, but will still not unlock). There is no button to press to open the trunk.
Why does my Jaguar XJ6 not start up?
About half of the time, the reason why the Jaguar XJ6 will not start or quits running is because of the two main electrical problems that I described above. The other cause of the XJ6 not starting or quits running is the fuel system. Mostly, it is the fuel pump being killed by rust flakes from the two fuel tanks.
Where is the fuel pump on a 1978 Jaguar XJ6?
On the 1978 XJ6 there is one fuel pump in the bottom of the trunk, on earlier versions, there used to be two fuel pumps, one for each tank. There is a switch on the dashboard, where you select which tank you want to pump from, the left tank, or the right tank.
