What causes a Jaguar X type to misfire?
If a cylinder has significantly lower compression pressure than others on start up. It could be a blown head gasket or even a cracked block or poorly sealed piston rings. If it were mine I would check all cylinder compressions and if they are ok look at the glow plugs and it’s control module. By the way what year is the Jag?

Why does my Jaguar X type have black smoke?
Id get lots of white smoke on start up and black smoke when accelerating hard. Also when driving with a balanced clutch the car would kangaroo as if the power was switching on and off (but revs would not increase like a clutch slip) eventually the coil light came on and the car cut out all together.
What causes engine to jerk under light acceleration?
It is not a coil or air mass meter because you have no fault code for it. Maybe a air leak on the inlet manifold but this would show up as running lean. There is no spark plug leads. I would change the fuel filter, it takes very low/high pressure to bring a fault code up for this.
