I drove my leon FR TDi home other week and I had the glow plug light come on and car went in to limp home mode, lost power etc. It happened while in cruse control. Only light I had flashing was the glow plug light. turned engine off and left it for a minuet… started it back up and never had the problem again!

When did the glow plug on my car stop working?

To my understanding, the flashing glow plug is an engine management warning, which can indicate a whole range of things. The only way to confirm the real issue is to have a diagnostic check done (where the car is connected to a computer and the fault codes logged by the car’s computer are read).

If a new glow plug doesn’t remedy the problem, take a look at other parts of the circuit, mainly the timer. The timer’s job is to turn the plugs off once the correct temperature has been reached. A faulty timer may keep the plugs on for too long, wearing them out, or even not turn the plugs on at all.
