Is the Jaguar XKR a good buy?
XKR 4.2 Convertible. The most reliable and cheap to service car I have ever owned. A very pleasant surprise for such an expensive and high performance car. Considering the performance, fuel consumption is pretty good although the fuel tank is annoyingly small for a car than is otherwise a perfect Grant Tourer.

The 4.2 is pretty robust. All the timing chain tensioner issues from the first generation AJ-V8 were sorted on the 4.2, and certainly by the time the X150 rolled out. On S-Type Rs there’s a coolant pipe in the engine valley which gets rather baked in the heat and will almost certainly fail at some point.

On the early V8 models, the plastic guides can crack. This causes a lot of noise, vibration and jumped timing. The cracking of the guides is often attributed to neglected oil changes and a bad design. If the engine has a history of overheating, the guides could be damaged.
