How are actuators used to control vehicle mode and temperature?
The blower motor moves air through the system. Air may be drawn from the outside or we can recirculate the air that is in the vehicle. This is necessary for maximum cooling and greatly reduces the load on the air-conditioning system. When cooling, dehumidifying it and removing heat makes air far more comfortable.
How are actuators used in dual zone systems?
Dual zone system may have two or more blend actuators. The fresh/circulate actuator controls inside and outside air used in the system. Sometimes also called fresh air re-circulate. A Heater control actuator can control heater flow. On some systems this is controlled by the mode actuator.
Can a scan tool be used to test actuators?
Actuators contain no serviceable parts and we must replace them as an assembly. The best way to test such actuators is with a scan-tool, designed for bidirectional communication. Such a tool can read the pulses sent to the actuator and the position it reports. When the commanded position does not equal the actual, an error code is set.

What does the mode door actuator do?
The Mode Door Actuator controls the direction of airflow. It selects which way air flows through the different ducts. If your climate control system has lost the ability to control which vents the air comes out of, the MDA has probably failed.
What does the actuator on an AC heater do?
Also called HVAC actuators, these small electric motors control the flow and blend of hot and cold air to the passenger areas by opening and closing the vent doors that let the air through. When one of these stops working, you may either get cold air but no hot air or there will be hot air with no cold air.
Where are the blend and mode door actuators located?
Both the blend door and mode door servos are in the same general area in the dash and while they are similar in construction, they are not interchangeable. The blend door actuator is the hardest to access, it is located at the bottom center of the dash directly above the center hump for the exhaust.
