What causes a well pump to not turn on?
If water pressure shown on the water pressure gauge falls below the pressure switch CUT-IN pressure and the pump won’t turn ON there could be several causes and fixes that we will describe in this article. As we will also explain, some well or water piping or water pump control problems can cause both pump-start and pump-stop problems.
When to expect a water pump to turn on?
When the water tank pressure gauge reading is above the water pump’s “cut-in” pressure (say 32 psi as we show in the photo below), don’t expect the pump to turn on. In that case, run some water in the building, watch the gauge pressure fall to below the pump’s cut-in pressure, and then we should hear the pump turn on.
Is it safe to test pumps with electricity?
Electricity can be very dangerous, so always use caution when working with electricity and turn off power supply breakers when testing components within the electrical system. If you are not 100% confident you can perform any of these tests safely, call a professional.
Can a pressure control switch turn on a well pump?
Most pump pressure control switches do NOT have this feature, however. Provided that you also have electrical power at the switch, the well pump should turn on if you lift this lever. Some manufacturers such as Square-D call this the “Maintained Manual Cut-in Lever or Manual Cut Out Lever” (depending on the switch model and application).
How to diagnose water pump won’t run?
Also seethis water pressure loss diagnostic table: WATER PRESSURE TABLE 1: PUMP WON’T RUN diagnostics. You don’t say if the problem is the pump won’t run or if it runs but doesn’t deliver water. Thank you, Ben, that well pump lubrication tip may help others. Let ne know ho much longer the pump continues to work.
What happens when you test the fuel pump?
When testing the fuel pump with a fuel pressure test gauge, you’ll get one of two results: correct fuel pump pressure, or low/no fuel pump pressure. The fuel pump is getting power and Ground. The fuel pump fuse is good. The fuel pump relay is good. The fuel pump is bad. Testing the fuel pump is something you can do.
What should I do if my well pump makes no noise?
If the well pump or control switch makes no noise at all, just hums or clicks, and when the water pump simply does not run these diagnostic questions may help track down and repair the trouble. This article series gives diagnosis & repair advice for well or water pumps, controls, tanks, water pressure, water flow, water quantity.
