Why is the gas level sensor on my Santa Fe not working?

At 70,000 miles my 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe gas level sensor started acting up. When I fill the tank it registers empty and the and the low fuel light endicator comes on. It eventually comes up after using about 1/4 of the gas. But each time you shut it off and restart it it goes back to empty and sometimes will not come back.
