Can EDS cause CRPS?
The association of these two diagnoses leads us to hypothesize that EDS might contribute to the development of CRPS in one or more of the following ways: via stretch injury to nerves traversing hypermobile joints, increased fragility of nerve connective tissue, or nerve trauma from more frequent surgery.
What is the first line treatment for complex regional pain syndrome?
Physical therapy is the cornerstone and first-line treatment for CRPS. Physical therapy is one of the few interventions that have been shown in controlled studies to be effective.
Can complex regional pain syndrome go away?
CRPS might go away on its own over time. But in some people, the symptoms can last or even get worse. Common treatments are pain medicines, physical therapy, electrical nerve stimulation, and injections of an anesthetic into the nerves.
Is complex regional pain syndrome inherited?
It is possible that genetic factors may contribute to CRPS; however, there is no clear genetic risk pattern known at this time. There are a few genes that may contribute to CRPS, but the ones most frequently identified are in genes that influence the immune system and inflammation.
Does EDS affect nerves?
Nervous damage from loose ligaments may explain slow development of moving skills, poor coordination, learning difficulties, headaches, and clumsiness in the EDS population. There is increased recognition of mechanisms of nerve injury from stretching and bending.
Can CRPS affect your heart?
The current CRPS study demonstrated increased heart rate and reduced heart rate variability. The pathologically reduced cardiac output and exaggerated increase in the total peripheral resistance during orthostatic stress point toward a dysfunction of the autonomic control of the cardiovascular system.
Why is EDS so painful?
Causes and contributors to pain in EDS can include joints coming out of position, previous surgery (often done to treat pain), muscle weakness, improper movement in the neck and back, or issues with sense of joint position.
