The rostral-most prominent part of the rat nose, known as the rhinarium, contains the nostrils (Fig. 1). In highly-magnified photographs of the rhinarium, nostrils were directed caudolaterally, and were separated by nasal tubercles.

Why is my rat sneezing?
However, in rats, a sneeze often comes with porphyrin, a parent compound that gives rise to bloody colored secretions. A little porphyrin pertains to irritation, but if there’s a buildup, it’s usually a sign of a serious lung infection (urinary infection, mycoplasma infection, ear infection, or advanced pyometra).

Rats have glands in their eyes which produce a reddish brown liquid. It can make them look like they have red tears or a nose bleed. Rats produce more of this liquid if they’re stressed.
