How long do eye appointments take?
Exactly how long your eye exam will take will depend on your individual circumstances, but most patients can expect their appointment to take between 30 and 45 minutes. If you need glasses or contact lenses, you may need to allow additional time to select these.
How long does an eye exam with dilation take?
Once the drops are administered, it typically takes 15-30 minutes to achieve fully dilated pupils, depending on the person’s response to the medication. How Long Does Eye Dilation Last? When eyes are dilated during an eye exam, it typically takes 4-6 hours for pupils to return to normal.
Does eye dilation hurt?
A dilated eye exam involves widening, or dilating, the pupil so the eye doctor can get a better view into your eye. The doctor dilates the eye using special eye drops. It’s not a painful process, and is tolerated well by most people.
How much does eye dilation cost?
When billed separately, the average price of dilation was $24. Oddly enough, the exact opposite was true for retinal imaging. It was more common to charge an additional fee for retinal imaging (72%) than to include it in the cost of the exam (28%). The average fee for retinal imaging was $33 when billed separately.
Can I use my phone after eye dilation?
Don’t stare at digital screens: Blue light emitted from electronic screens can contribute to digital eye strain. Until your pupils return to normal after dilation, limit your screen time and exposure to blue light to avoid discomfort.
Can I wear contacts after eye dilation?
Once your eyes have fully dilated, your doctor will come back to do a thorough examination. Your doctor will then review the results with you in the office. After you’re finished with the exam, you can wear your glasses or contact lenses again.
Is retinal imaging covered by OHIP?
For example, OHIP does not cover digital retinal photography, Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT), or contact lens fittings and assessments. Visual field testing is not always covered by OHIP. Our office will bill OHIP for services wherever possible, but in some cases the cost of testing will be billed to the patient.
Are ophthalmologists covered by OHIP?
Yes. OHIP covers one eye examination every 12 months for insured persons 65 years and older, provided by either an optometrist or physician. Any follow-up assessments that may be required are also covered.
Can you refuse to have eyes dilated?
Technically, you can undergo an eye exam without worrying about eye dilation in certain situations. But it’s not going to be a very thorough eye exam, and your ophthalmologist or optometrist could miss potential problems with your eyes.
