What is Rspan VLAN?
Local SPAN: Mirrors traffic from one or more interface on the switch to one or more interfaces on the same switch. Remote SPAN (RSPAN): An extension of SPAN called remote SPAN or RSPAN. This VLAN is then trunked to other switches, allowing the RSPAN session traffic to be transported across multiple switches.
How do you set up a Rspan?
Configuring RSPAN
- On the source device, enter the configure terminal command to access global configuration mode.
- Enter the rspan-vlan command, specifying a VLAN ID, to define an RSPAN VLAN on the source device.
- Enter the tagged ethernet command, specifying an interface, to add a member port.
Is Rspan Cisco proprietary?
SPAN (Switched Port Analyzer) is a Cisco Proprietary feature which allows to send a copy of traffic passing through ports to another port on the switch. As demand on deep packet inspection and analysis grew , so did the development on SPAN and Cisco cam up with RSPAN and ERSPAN.
How do I monitor network traffic on a Cisco router interface?

- Step 2: Enter enable mode.
- Step 3: Enter the configuration terminal.
- Step 4: Enter your interface’s configuration.
- Step 5: Configure which ports to monitor.

How can I see traffic on my Cisco router?
How to Display Current TCP Traffic on a Cisco Router
- Log in to the Cisco router with administrative credentials.
- Type the following command at the router’s command prompt: show control-plane host open-ports.
- Press the “Enter” key.
- View the data in the fourth column labeled “Services.” Each open TCP connection is listed.
What is the difference between local span and RSPAN?
Local SPAN sessions gather a set of ingress and egress packets specified by the user and form them into a stream of SPAN data, which is directed to the destination port. RSPAN consists of at least one RSPAN source session, an RSPAN VLAN, and at least one RSPAN destination session.
Can a switch run more than one RSPAN session?
There can be more than one source session and more than one destination session active in the same RSPAN VLAN. There can also be intermediate switches separating the RSPAN source and destination sessions. These switches need not be capable of running RSPAN, but they must respond to the requirements of the RSPAN VLAN (see the “RSPAN VLAN” section ).
How is RSPAN traffic copied to a destination port?
The RSPAN traffic from the source ports or VLANs is copied into the RSPAN VLAN and forwarded over trunk ports carrying the RSPAN VLAN to a destination session monitoring the RSPAN VLAN. Each RSPAN source switch must have either ports or VLANs as RSPAN sources. The destination is always a physical port, as shown on Switch C in the figure.
