Why do I need to Prime my injector pump?
As the fuel is delivered from the injection pump, each injector disburses the fuel into the motor’s cylinders, where it combusts, and keeps the motor running. During routine maintenance, such as fuel filter replacements, you may need to prime the injection pump to remove air from the fuel system.
How does a direct injection fuel pump work?
A direct injection fuel pump can’t increase its speed independent of the engine to increase it’s output or pressure, so it has to control the volume of fuel that is compressed. This relationship is what makes direct injection high-pressure fuel pumps a mystery to some technicians and even engineers.

Do you have to Prime a positive displacement pump?
Positive displacement pumps also have excellent suction lift capabilities. In short, to avoid failures, centrifugal pumps must always be primed before operating.

How can I tell if my diesel injector pump is working?
Listen for the vehicle’s electric lift pump to begin transferring diesel from the fuel tank to the fuel filter housing and, in turn, the injector pump. The lift pump will sound like a buzzing coming from the fuel tank. If you do not hear the lift pump working, bump the engine a second time.
Why does my fuel pump not start when primed?
Q: Trouble starting unless I prime the fuel pump, turn off key and then prime again and start it. Trouble starting engine, I have to switch to “on” wait a few seconds, then back to “on” then finally turn the key to start engine. If I try to start normally, it would hold the idle and dies after a couple seconds or doesn’t crank over at all.
Do you have to Prime a self priming pump?
1. Even a self priming pump has to be primed initially. Even a self-priming pump has to be primed prior to the first operation. No matter the manufacturer, there is a priming chamber (integral or external) or some portion of the volute that will require filling prior to startup. Please read the manual and/or contact the manufacturer for details.
How does the fuel pump and injector work?
The injection pressure of fuel to be injected into cylinder is controlled by the fuel injector; and the amount and timing of such injection is controlled by the fuel pump. This injection pressure of a fuel injector depends upon its spring setting set by the manufacturer. On another hand a fuel pump works based on the position of cam and camshaft.

How does a high pressure fuel pump work?
The key to direct injection is a high-pressure fuel pump. This pump is precision-machined to generate fuel pressure to the rail up to 2,500 psi. These high-pressure fuel pumps are typically driven by a camshaft and are able to vary their displacement and output to match the needs of the engine.
What should fuel pressure be on a Cummins PT pump?
2. Connect a pressure gauge to the quick disconnect fitting of the fuel pump. Start cranking the engine and observe the cranking fuel pressure. Minimum cranking pressure should be 25psi. 3. If the fuel pressure is below the specification, check to be sure there is a fuel supply to the pump and that it is not restricted.
