How big are the sprockets on a motorcycle?
So let’s look at the factory set up on my bike, and see why it felt that way. The stock sprockets on my R1 are 17 teeth in front, and 45 teeth in the rear. Some simple math gives us the gearing ratio: 45/17=2.647.
How many rotations does a rear sprocket need?
To turn the rear sprocket once, the counter shaft sprocket has to spin the number of times in the “Ratio” column. (see gear ratio image) As an example, a 30 tooth rear sprocket and a 10 tooth front sprocket equals a 3.00 gearing ratio or three rotations on the front for every one rotation on the rear.
Which is better front or rear sprocket for dirt bike?
For Faster Acceleration (more bottom end) Use a small front sprocket (countershaft) or larger rear sprocket. For every 1 tooth you change on the front, it is the equivalent to changing 3-4 teeth on the rear. Creates a lower gearing ratio.
What’s the ratio of stock sprockets to mods?
By using these figures, riders are typically expressing how many teeth they changed from stock. On sport bikes, common mods are to go -1 in front, +2 or +3 in back, or a combination of the two. The problem with that nomenclature is that it only takes on meaning relative to what size the stock sprockets are.

Do you have control over the sprocket ratio?
Sprocket ratio is a key part of that equation (and the only part over which you have any control) and thus, the sprocket ratio chart is a nice convenience. But, any of the aforementioned parameters can have a big effect. If you’re off by more than about 3-5% you won’t be as happy with the results as you could/should be.
What happens when you change the front sprocket on a tbolt?
As a general guide, changing 1 tooth size on the front is equivalent to changing around 4 teeth on the rear. If you replace the front sprocket with a smaller one (less teeth) you will increase low end power but decrease the top-end speed – good for tight motocross or supercross tracks.
