The Castle was to become the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, King Henry VIII’s second wife, who became Queen of England for just 1,000 days. It was Henry’s love for Anne and her insistence that she became his wife rather than his mistress that led to the King renouncing Catholicism and creating the Church of England.
Who is buried at Hever Castle?
The Church is well known for being the final resting place of Sir Thomas Boleyn, Anne Boleyn’s father and Elizabeth I’s grandfather. Sir Thomas’ tomb is located in the Bullen Chapel, added to the original church in the middle of the 15th century.

Did Henry 8th live at Hever Castle?
In 1540 Henry VIII married his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves which ended in divorce six months later. Henry VIII allowed her to lease a number of manors to enhance her status and income, including Hever. Anne owned Hever Castle until her death in 1557.

What happened to Anne Boleyns belongings?
It was apparently passed on to her daughter, Elizabeth I, who gave it as a gift to Richard Master, her physician, and then he eventually gave it to St John the Baptist Parish Church in Cirencester where it still lives today. Isn’t it sad that we cannot see more of the possessions of this amazing Queen of England?
Why did the Astor family sell Hever Castle?
Between 1903 and 1908 Astor set about the restoration of the Castle, construction of the Astor Wing and creation of the lake and gardens. Following the floods in 1968 the cost of running the estate was becoming too expensive and the Castle and some 3000 acres were sold to the present owner, John Guthrie, in 1983.
