How do I get SANE certified?
To become a SANE, registered nurses must take a Sexual Assault Examiner Class comprised of 40 hours of classroom training, followed by an average of 40 hours of clinical training. IAFN has Educational Guidelines that recommend this training as a minimum starting point for SANEs.
What is SANE training?
SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) or SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) Training. The Adult/Adolescent SAFE Protocol recommends that communities strive toward having healthcare professionals to conduct the medical forensic examination who are specially trained.
Is SANE a credential?
Certification as a SANE-A® and/or SANE-P® signifies that a sexual assault nurse examiner has demonstrated the highest standards of forensic nursing practice.
Is SANE certification National?
The Association, through the CFNC, offers the only national and international certification examinations for adult/adolescent and pediatric/adolescent sexual assault nurse examiners. Certification as a SANE-A® demonstrates the SANE’s high level of knowledge, expertise, and professional commitment.
What do SANE nurses do?
A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner is a registered nurse who completed additional education and training to provide comprehensive health care to survivors of sexual assault. The SANE ultimately provides culturally sensitive, developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and patient-specific evaluation and treatment.
How long do SANE exams take?
2-6 hours
The SANE Exam can take as long as 2-6 hours to complete. To help you feel as comfortable as possible, you can ask for a heated blanket, food, or drink.
Can an LPN Be a SANE nurse?
To become a SANE you must have a minimum of a Registered Nursing (RN) license or its equivalent in your country. SANE practice is outside the scope of practice of a Paramedic or LPN/LVN.
