What does Stax mean in Memphis?
Stax Records, originally named Satellite Records, was founded in Memphis in 1957 by Jim Stewart, initially operating in a garage. Satellite’s early releases were country music, rockabilly records or straight pop numbers, reflecting the tastes of Stewart (a country fiddle player) at the time.
Why did Stax go out of business?
In 15 years, Stax placed more than 167 hit songs in the Top 100 on the pop charts, and a staggering 243 hits in the Top 100 R&B charts. It launched the careers of such legendary artists as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Rufus & Carla Thomas, Booker T, & the MGs, and numerous others.

How long is the Stax Museum tour?
There is about a ten minute film at the beginning and then it is self guided. I would allow 90 minutes to 2 hours. over a year ago. There is no formal tour…you’re on your own, which is just fine.
