I lived above a highway for a year or so. It was actually fairly quiet, a thrum, generally. However, what was really annoying were the big trucks with their jake brakes and downshifting around the curves. We had a huge stand of mature trees between us and the freeway but it was omnipresent in noise and in road dust.
