The electronic shift assist reduces shifting effort by limiting engine RPM. This also results in smoother shifting. When the vertical drive is all the way in forward or reverse gear the overstroke switch shuts off the electronic shift assist.

Can you bypass shift interrupter switch?

You don’t need to take the control apart……just follow the yellow wires (with red tracers) and you will find a connection. You can disconnect it there and jump the two wires together to bypass the switch…but don’t tell anyone I told you!

How do you adjust an OMC throttle cable?

  1. Loosen the throttle cable adjuster jam-nut with the wrenches. Extend or contract the adjuster until the cable moves the throttle to the idle position.
  2. Push the control lever forward to the “Forward idle” position.
  3. Pull the control lever back, through neutral, into the reverse idle position.

When did OMC Cobra sterndrive go out of business?

OMC went bankrupt in December 2000. Bombardier has purchased the outboard business and the Evinrude and Johnson brandnames. Bombardier is supplying Cobra sterndrive parts, with some price increases. My understanding is that OMC still exists as a legal entity, but they’ve closed their business, and sold off the rights to their products.

Why did OMC change the bite angle on the Cobra?

Thanks to Carl G. Craver for this tidbit. Some early Cobras ate their gearsets. OMC initially thought the clutch dogs were disengaging due to insufficient “bite” (interference cut) on the clutch dog teeth. OMC increased the bite angle from two to five degrees, and all subsequent Cobra clutch dogs have five-degree teeth.
